3 Summer 2022 Study Abroad Programs To Apply For RIGHT NOW
Disclaimer: None of these programs are sponsored by any company mentioned below. I selected each of these based on research and recommendations from students who have had great experiences in the past. Thank you.
The return of study abroad has been long-awaited and the anticipation grows by the day as we head towards warmer weather and longer days.
For students interested in summer study abroad programs in 2022, there are many options available that will still strike a good balance between immersion and accommodating those who are looking to bridge the gap between a full semester program and having a short study abroad experience.
While we could spend hours talking about different formats of programs, here are three that are worth considering if you want to embark on a study abroad semester away in summer 2022.
1. CEA 2022 Summer Study + Internship Seville Spain Program
For lovers of all things authentic culture, I would invite you to learn more about CEA (short for Cultural Experiences Abroad) and their Summer Study + Internship in Seville program.
Offering students the opportunity to combine learning with international work experience, this program is the ideal way to further explore the country of Spain, get exposure to the work culture, and begin building your overseas network.
Similar to many other study abroad offers, this eight-week program is short enough where you can still have time to do other things (including hopefully TRAVEL!) after it’s over before the new school year begins, but long enough to where you actually have some substantial and tangible elements to reflect on for the future.
Internship placements are offered in many areas of interest including Advertising, Business, Culinary Arts, Marketing, Politics, and Publishing.
Price Point: $6,995 – includes housing, excursions, and placement for internship
Deadline to apply: February 15, 2022
2. AIFS Study Travel Program
AIFS, formally known as the American Institute of Foreign Study, is one of the oldest nonprofit organizations in the study abroad programming space. If you’ve been reading here for a while, you will also know that I have my own personal relationship with this company and always sing their praises because of my great experience with them during my London Internship Programme in 2007 and Florence Semester in 2008. (And no! This content is NOT sponsored!).
Their study-travel program is ideal for students that have a multi-passion in different topic areas or who are majoring and minoring in comparable topic areas. Focused on offering the chance for students to study abroad in several cities as part of a cohort, instead of experiencing the culture of one location like most summer study abroad students, you might be eligible to study abroad in up to four locations.
Another great aspect of the program is that you’ll spend as much time outside of the classroom as you do inside. Students are encouraged to gain ‘real world’ experience by immersing themselves in the industries of their desire first hand. AIFS offers you the chance to connect with experts in your field of interest, offers seminars and forums, and also provides you with other tools you’ll need to “bring your learning to life”.
Study travel programs offered for summer 2022 include Art & Activism, Global Cuisine, Fashion Marketing, The Science of Wellbeing, and Sustainable Cities.
Price Point: $6200-$8000 USD (dependent on location, includes amenities such as housing, meals, insurance, and a dedicated program manager.
Deadline to apply: March 1, 2022
3. CIEE Summer 2022 in Berlin Program
Berlin is definitely no exception when it comes to serving as a lovely background for a potential unforgettable summer abroad. This capital city holds more history than you’ll ever absorb and is the ideal mosaic of german culture.
CIEE (or the Council for International Educational Exchange) offers an intensive four-week (there is also an eight-week and 12-week version) immersion course focused on the pillars of Architecture, Society, and Culture. During your summer program, you will have the chance to explore Berlin (and nearby towns) through the prism of these topic areas and learn how to effectively make connections of history at various sites.
There is also an optional language component for students who would like to learn conversational german during their stay.
Price Point: $4,250 – $11,050 (varies based on length)
Deadline to apply: April 1, 2022
While all of the programs mentioned above are wonderful options, I highly recommended that you continue to do other research to see what else is out there as well. For some organizations and schools, Summer 2022 may still see modified programming, such as a start with virtual instruction followed by a shorter, in-person component.
And of course, others will wait and may decide to relaunch in Fall 2022.
No matter when you decide to study abroad, I hope that you seek a program that has value towards your areas of interest, will assist in driving your passions, and is seen as worthwhile for the cost, both in the moment and when thinking of long term benefits.
Until next time,
-K
